What Is Cold Spin Technology and Why Is It Important?

As we know, there are two types of juicers. Centrifugal juicers, which are the type of juice extractors that we’ve all used at one time or another. And then there are Masticating juicers, which are also known as Cold Press juicers or slow juicers.

One of the cons of centrifugal juicers was that when they operated, the spinning of the cutting disc would transfer heat onto the ingredients, making them lose some of their nutrients. That’s when slow or cold press juicers came along to save the day. A Slow juicer does not have a disc like a Centrifugal juicer does, it works slowly and has no heat transfer. That’s why cold press juicers have been quite popular, as of late.

The Breville Juice Fountain Cold XL is a centrifugal juicer. Does that mean that you’ll losing nutrients as you juice due to heat transfer? No, because that’s where Breville’s Cold Spin technology comes in…

The stainless steel cutting disc surrounded by Italian made mesh filter allows the juice to flow through the disc, which brings down the heat transfer down to less than 1.8°F. So, while the Juice Fountain Cold XL is not a slow juicer, it has much less heat transfer than your average centrifugal juicers.

The Juice Fountain Elite is perhaps Breville’s most popular juicer. This is the juicer that was used in the famous Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary. It’s been a while since the Juice Fountain Elite was released. It’s still going strong, however, new technologies have been introduced since then. So let’s have a look at the difference between it and the newer Juice Fountain Cold XL:

Cold Spin Technology: this is obviously one of the important features to come to the Juice Fountain Cold XL. This technology is what is going to ensure that your juice keeps as much nutrients as possible, which still operating in fast speed. The Juice Fountain Elite does not have Cold Spin technology.

Speed: Juice Fountain Elite operates at two speeds, low or high, using a simple switch button to choose either speed. The Juice Fountain Cold XL has a dial knob and variable speeds to choose from: These speed settings are labeled as QUIET: which is slowest and works at 40% noise reduction, works perfectly for soft ingredients. FAST: this setting can extract up to 70 oz of juice up to 5x faster than a cold press juicer. Then there’s BOOST setting: which is the fastest and works best for hard ingredients.

Capacity: Juice Fountain Elite includes a 40 oz jug while the Juice Fountain Cold XL includes a 70 oz jug with a seal.

Chute Size: The Juice Fountain Elite has a 3” wide chute. The Juice Fountain Cold XL has a 3.5” chute. Both are wide chutes and don’t need ingredient prep for most fruit and vegetables.

Power: Juice Fountain Elite has 1000 Watts power, Juice Fountain Cold XL operates at 1200 Watts power.

Which One To Buy?

As of the time of writing this post, I see a price difference of only $49 between these two juicers. This looks about a fair price to pay for Cold Spin technology, an XL jug capacity, an XL chute and variable speed settings. All that makes the Juice Fountain Cold XL a much better choice.

The Fountain Crush is another popular choice for a juicer from Breville. However, there’s a big difference between it and the Juice Fountain Cold XL:

  • Juice Fountain Cold XL is a centrifugal juicer.
  • Fountain Crush is a masticating (slow) juicer.

So, it’s quite different how both juicers operate:

  • Juice Fountain Cold XL operates at high speed with a 1200 Watts motor to yield juice in fast manner, all without transferring heat to the juice, thanks to Cold Spin Technology.
  • Fountain Crush works very slowly with 240-watts motor to extract as much juice as possible from each ingredient.

Juice Fountain Cold XL, being a fast juicer, is designed to juice more and as quick as possible, that’s why it includes a large 70 oz jug that you can juice directly into. A juicer like Fountain Crush, or any slow juicer for that manner, includes a small jug that is not meant to use for storing, but only to collect the juice when juicing.

The chute on the Fountain Crush is small, so prepping your ingredients is required unlike with the extra wide chute of the Juice Fountain Cold XL which can accommodate full size ingredients without the need for cutting.

Which One To Buy?

As these two are different kind of juicers, the question is, what juicer type would you prefer? Slow juicer or centrifugal juicer? If you’re not sure, read our article on the difference between them here. Once you’ve figured out your preferred method of juicing, you’ll be able to pick between these two models.

What Is a Whole Slow Juicer and What Does It Do?

You’ve probably heard of a slow juicer and its benefits. Also known as a masticating juicer, a slow juicer uses a really slow rotation mechanism to produce juice. That way, you’re getting more juice our of your ingredients, less burn (which is caused by rapid rotation), and more nutrients. But what does it mean when it’s called a ‘Whole Slow Juicer? That simply refers to the fact that it’s a slow juicer with a wide chute that fits whole fruit or vegetable without the need for you to cut them before juicing.

One of the leading brands in making Whole Slow Juicers is Kuvings, whose juicers we will feature and compare in this post. In fact, Kuvings owns the patent for the wide chute, so when looking for a whole slow juicer, this is the brand to go for.

We will have a look at the features of the Kuvings C7000 Series, B6000 Series and how they compare to each other. We will also look at Hurom juicers and compare it to Kuvings.

Features of Kuvings C7000 Elite Whole Slow Juicer:

  • Low-speed juicing at 60 Rotations Per Minute. The low speed preserves healthy enzymes and delays oxidation process.

  • Use your juicer to prepare juice from fruit, vegetables and leafy greens. You can also use it to make nut milks and frozen desserts.
  • No-mess Smart Cap that prevents dripping.
  • Pulp Cup allows you to strain and adjust the amount of pulp in your juice.
  • Includes an attachment for making Sorbet.
  • Cleaning tool made specially for the strainer, and other brushes to make cleaning your juicer a breeze.

Looking at the list of features above, it is hard to see that there is any difference between the two models. Yet, there are a few upgrades on the C7000 models that are worth mentioning:

  • It includes more accessories: like the hopper for smaller ingredients and the straining for adjusting or removing pulp from your juice.
  • There are also other improvements to the internal parts of the juicer:
    • Slightly redesigned auger that works better.
    • Juicing screen has been redesigned to be easier to clean and less pulp blocking.
    • Redesigned juicing bowl.
    • The base of the juicers have slight differences but only aesthetically. The motors are the same.

Watch this video or see the upgraded parts:

Should You Upgrade Your Kuvings B6000 To the C7000?

If you already own a Kuvings B6000, is it worth it to upgrade? If your juicer works perfectly, there’s no need for the upgrade. While the upgraded parts on the C7000 make the juicing process smoother, it’s not worth it to ditch your working juicer and buy a new one.

Hurom is a South Korean company that also has quite a popular range of slow juicers. Depending on the model you look at, you’ll find a variety of features and capabilities.

  • The biggest difference though is that the Kuvings is a whole slow juicer with a wide chute, while the Hurom isn’t. So if a wide chute is something of importance to you, then you’ll want to go for the Kuvings.

Other than the wide chute, Hurom juicers come with nice features worth considering:

  • Two juicing screens, one with a fine screen (strainer) and another with coarse screen.
  • You can use a Hurom to juice fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and wheatgrass. It also processes nut milks and soybeans for making soy milk and tofu.
  • It works at 43 RPM, so it’s slower than the Kuvings.

Both Hurom and Kuvings juicers are made in South Korea.

Which Brand Do You Choose?

  • The biggest advantage to the Kuvings juicer is the wide chute. If you want as less prep time as possible, a Kuvings juicer would make your best choice.
  • But if you want the lowest speed, Hurom has it. It works at 43 Rotations Per Minute, so there’s even less oxidization and possibly higher juice yield. It also includes more accessories allowing you to use your juicer to more than just juice (like soy milk and tofu).

How do you choose between  SKG and Kuving? The SKG juicer is more comparable to the Kuvings B6000 model. It has the same speed and includes the same accessories. Although the Kuvings does have better cleaning tool, and for those who are interested in the origins of the appliance, the Kuvings juicer is made in Korea, while the SKG is made in China.

Otherwise, these two juicers seem quite comparable with not much difference in features.

What Is Hurom Juicer and What Makes It Special?

Hurom makes slow juicers that are among the slowest in the market. That might sound like a bad thing, but in Slow Juicing, you want the slowest speed possible. Slower means more nutrient and less heat transfer.

Hurom is a Korean brand and their juicers are still made in Korea, which gives them an edge over some other brands.

In this post, we’ll look at the most popular Hurom Juicer models and compare them to each other.

Features of Hurom H-AA:

  • Slow Squeeze Technology: rotates at the speed of 43 revolutions per minute, ensuring your juice retains all its nutrients.
  • High yield of juice due to the slowness of the juicing process. The juicer squeezes the most out of your ingredients and brings out bone-dry pulp.
  • Control lever allows you to control the amount of pulp in the juice. The strainer goes from fine to coarse.
  • Use it to juice fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts and soybeans to make nut milks or tofu.
  • You can also create frozen treats using frozen ingredients.
  • Streamlined design with slimmer back gives it a modern and sleek look.
  • Available in many colors.
  • Made in Korea.

What Is The Difference Between Hurom H-AA vs. HZ?

Hurom HZ is a more premium model than the H-AA model. But is there much of a difference between them?

  • The Hurom HZ has the same features as the H-AA, except for one:
  • It has an LED indicator that shows you what mode the juicer is operation on.
  • Other than that, the difference is in the material and the attachments that comes with.
  • The HZ model has a premium stainless steel finish.
  • It comes with a citrus press attachment

Click here to learn more about Hurom HZ, read the customer reviews and buy it

What Is The Difference Between Hurom H-AA vs. ALPHA?

  • Hurom Alpha has an upgraded drum that is slower.
  • While the juicing speed is the same as other Hurom juicers, which is 43 RPM. The spinning brush has a rotating speed of 17 RPM. A slower spinning brush means that the juice is gently mixed within the bowl, which in turn prevents overflow and foam build-up.

Features of Hurom Elite Slow Juicer:

  • 2nd Generation of Hurom Juicers.
  • Twin-winged auger squeezes ingredients more thoroughly.
  • 40 RPM speed.
  • Juice cap on the spout for drip-free pouring.
  • Juices fruits (hard or soft), vegetables, leafy greens, wheatgrass, nuts and more.

Click here to learn more about Hurom Elite, read the customer reviews and buy it

What Is The Difference Between Hurom Elite vs. H-AA?

  • To be honest, we can’t seem to find much difference between the two models. In fact, according to Hurom’s website, Elite which is an older model, is slower than the H-AA model. But only by 3 rotations per minute, so we can’t say that’s a huge difference.
  • The Elite is an older model, and the H-AA is one of their newer 2016 models. So you’ll probably notice more upgrades in the design and colors than the actual hardware.
  • The H-AA models seem to be more compact and has a slimmer and more modern design. In fact, it is lighter than the Elite model with 10.6 pounds weight. While the Elite weighs 13.8 pounds.
  • Both models are made in Korea.

Hurom Compared to Other Brands:

Now we’ve compared Hurom models to each other. Are you wondering how it compares to other brands?

One of the most asked about brands is Kuvings, which is another popular name in the world of vertical slower juicers.

For this comparison, we’ll compare the Kuvings B6000S to the Hurom Elite, as both are at almost the same price and range.

Hurom Elite vs. Kuvings B6000S Slower Juicers, What’s The Difference?

Features of the Kuvings B6000S:

  • Juice processing at 60 RPM.
  • Wide chute for easy juicing. Most ingredients can fit as a whole without the need for cutting.
  • 240W motor power with quiet operation.
  • Smart Cap for drip-free pouring. Self-rinse option helps clean the juicer.
  • Perfect for juicing fruit, vegetables, leafy greens and making sorbet with frozen fruit.

Click here to learn more about Kuvings B6000S, read the customer reviews and buy it

How Does It Compare To Hurom Elite?

  • If Kuvings is famous for one thing, it’s the wide chute on its juicers. The chute is wide enough to fit whole fruit or veggies without the need for chopping or prepping. This saves you a lot of time when juicing.
  • On the other hand, Kuvings has higher RPM, 60 vs 43 RPM on the Hurom. This means that the Hurom processes the juice in a slower manner and therefore squeezes out more juice.
  • Kuvings juicer is also made in Korea.

So the biggest difference here is the wide chute on the Kuvings, which makes it a great choice for anyone who wants to reduce their juicing time by eliminating preparation.

Hurom vs. Omega, What’s The Difference?

Omega’s slow juicers are another popular choice for a slow juicer, although they fall under another category of horizontal juicers. You can read our comprehensive guide on Omega juicers here.

Features of the Omega J8006:

  • Horizontal masticating juicer with 80 RPM speed.
  • Dual-stage juicing system.
  • Multi-use: can be used for making nut butters, baby food, soy milk, pasta, grind coffee and mince herbs or garlic.
Can be used to juice any type of fruit, vegetables, leafy greens including wheatgrass.
  • Made in Korea.

Click here to learn more about Omega J8006, read the customer reviews and buy it

How Does It Compare to Hurom?

  • First difference here is, Omega is a horizontal juicer, which works slightly differently than a vertical juicer.
  • A horizontal juicer like Omega take up a lot of space and not as comfortable to use as vertical juicers. The height under the spout barely fits a glass, which means you’ll have to keep juicing small amount and transfer it to a jug or a bottle. Unlike with a vertical juicer which has a higher spout and allows you to juice directly into a jug.
  • Omega does offer some vertical juicer models, but its horizontal models remain the most popular.
  • Another thing is speed, Omega has a 80 RPM speed, which is considered slow in comparison to centrifugal juicers, but in comparison to Hurom’s 43 RPM, it is not the slowest juicer in its category. And you definitely want the slowest slow juicer for the most benefits.

The name ‘Cold Pressed Juice’ often comes up in health and nutrition world, where it comes highly recommended by experts in that field. Here in Super Kitchen, we’ve covered and reviewed many Slow Juicers like Omega, Breville, Hurom, or SKG and how it compares to Omega. But is there a difference between Cold Press Juicer and Slow Juicer?

What Is Cold Press and Slow Juicing?

To answer the question, Cold Press is the same thing as Slow Juicing. So It’s just two names for the same method of juicing. A third name to keep in mind is also ‘Masticating Juicer’. All of these names refer to the same method of slow juicing.

Why Is It Called Slow Juicing or Cold Press Juicing?

In traditional method of juicing or extracting, the juicer uses a fast spinning blade to crush and separate the juice from the pulp or flesh of the fruit or vegetable you’re juicing. This fast blade running against the metal mesh filter of the juicer creates heat that destroys the enzymes of the fruit and veggies, making them lose some of their nutrients.

On the other hand, a slow juicer (cold press), runs in a much slower pace. It does not have a metal blade inside, but a mill-like component that crushes and presses the fruit/vegetable to yield as much of its juice as possible. Since there’s no heat generated (thus the name Cold Press), the ingredients preserve their nutrients and enzymes, giving you more benefit.

Benefits of Cold Press Juice:

In the photo above [photo credityou can see the clear difference between juice that has been made by a cold press slow juicer and a centrifugal juicer (traditional juicer). Apart from the fact that cold press juice contains more nutrients, a cold press juicer gives you higher yield (so you use less ingredients), longer shelf life, less pulp and the juice doesn’t separate, which only emphasizes the fact that it contains more in it.

Why You Should Buy a Cold Press/Slow Juicer:

If you’re torn apart between a regular juicer and a cold press/slow juicer, here are some reasons you should consider a slow juicer over a centrifugal one:

  • Slow juicer can be more expensive, but they do more than just juice. Most of them can process nuts, so you can create nut butters or nut milks. Some come with attachments to make sorbet/frozen treats, grind coffee or even make pasta!
  • They yield more juice, so you use less ingredients and save on groceries.
  • The juice made by a slow juicer has longer shelf life, which means less waste.
  • It simply makes more delicious and more nutritious juice.
  • Noise level is very low.

The Best Slow Juicers To Buy:

We’ve written about many slow juicers from different brands and compared them in terms of features. You can read all our comparisons by clicking here.

Wheatgrass is known for its incredible benefits when drank as a juice, and many people like to include it as an ingredient in their green juicers, or drink it on its own as a shot. Yet, Wheatgrass remains a very tricky ingredient to juice, and not just any juicer is up for this job.

When juicing Wheatgrass, you have two options:

  • Use a manual juicer that is made for juicing wheatgrass (which is going to be a workout on its own).
  • Or use a slow juicer. These type of juicers have the ability to juice any vegetable, fruit or green leaves – including wheatgrass, without any issues.

FeatureLow Speed Minimal Oxidation Masticating Juicer - Compared with juice from centrifugal juicers, our juice is much more nutritious, tastes better and fresher, and lasts longer. Top Quality 240W AC motor with low speed of 60 RPMs (the golden ratio of force and time) - Squeezes ingredients with minimal oxidation, preserving natural taste & nutrients lost by high-speed centrifugal juicers that grind, crush, and heat (from the fast-rotating blade).
3" Inches (76MM) Big Mouth Wide Chute - can easily accommodate large produce items; has more resistances to clogging; greatly reduces preparation and cleanup time - Less chopping of the ingredients also helps to reduce oxidation, as the bigger pieces of ingredients, the harder they get oxidized.
High Juice Yield with Little Oxidation - High juice yield (Orange 85-90%, Pear 78-83%, Apple 65-75%, Celery 65-70%, Carrot 42-47%) - The strainer base and the valve provide a sealed space to hold juice during juicing to prevent oxidation. The valve should be shut during juicing.

  • As an appliance, both SKG and Omega are the same, they are slow juicer (also known as masticating juicers). However, SKG works with a slower speed than the Omega, 60 RPM vs. 80 RPM. Which means, the SKG will yield more juice with less oxidation.
  • Design wise, the SKG is a vertical juicer, which means it takes less counter top space. The Omega is a horizontal juicer that could take up a lot of space on your counter top, and it’s certainly harder to stash away.
  • The SKG has a wide 3” chute, which means, you don’t have to cut your ingredients to small pieces before hand, eliminating the dreaded prep time. The Omega juicer has a small chute that requires you cut down your ingredients before hand.
  • One of the biggest advantages an Omega juicer has is the fact that it is a multi-purpose appliance. It’s not only a juicer, but thanks to its attachments, it can make nut butters, nut milks, it can make pasta, grind coffee beans and more. The SKG is mainly a juicer only, but has an attachment for turning frozen fruit into a delicious sorbet.
  • The spout on the SKG has a cap that keeps any juice from dripping. The Omega juicer does not have this, so you should expect some counter space mess and juice dripping.

Which One To Buy?

Of course, like we always say, the ultimate choice is yours to make. But we like to point out a few things to help you out with your decision:

  • At first glance, you might think that the Omega gives you a lot of value for your money because of its multi-functionality. But do you really need all these functions out of your juicer? It’s all great and can be helpful for finishing up tasks in your kitchen, but also, using the same appliance for many different tasks could lead to a shorter lifespan of that appliance.
  • The SKG Juicer, although it’s nearly at the same price as the Omega, but can only function as juicer, has a better built and more modern design. It is slow, so it yields more juice, and because of its large chute, there’s little to no prep time. So you’ll be saving in your grocery shopping, save on prep time and do less clean up.

Review of Omega J8006 Juicer:

In This Post:

Breville is an Australian brand that has grown in popularity world wide due to it’s super quality and sleek design for kitchen appliances. Breville pays good attention to their design without compromising the user experience, and this applies to all their appliances, including juicers, which is what we will talk about in this post.

Before we get into which Breville Juicer is best to buy, let’s talk about the kind of juicers and difference between them.

Centrifugal vs. Masticating, Which Type of Juicer Do You Want?

The two most popular type of juicers is the Centrifugal and Masticating (Slow) juicers.

  • The Centrifugal Juicer is the most common of these two and has been around in a long time. This type of juicer uses a spinning blade that runs against a filter, which works on separately the juice from the flesh of the fruit or vegetable. Traditionally, with a centrifugal juicer there are two containers, one that catches the juice and another for the pulp of the fruit/veg.
  • With a Masticating Juicer, the fruit/veg is first crushed then slowly pressed to give you the most out of what you’re pressing. This type of juicer is newer than Centrifugal juicers and it’s known for its slow processing.

Pros and Cons of a Centrifugal and Masticating Juicer:

  • While Centrifugal juicers are more popular and more affordable than Masticating juicers, there’s one issue with them. Centrifugal juicers spin very fast, and that spinning produces heat that actually kills some of the good enzymes of the fruit or vegetables you’re juicing. So with a centrifugal juicer, you’re not getting the full nutrients from your juice.
  • On the other hand, a masticating juicer works at only 70 to 80 rpm (in comparison to centrifugal speed of over 6000 rpm). Therefor, no heat is produced and no enzymes are kills. Also, a masticating juicer first crushes then presses the fruit, so the whole process is different and is designed to yield more juice and maximum nutrient.
  • Another great benefit of a masticating juicer is that (some) can do a lot more than just juicing, they can create nut butters, nut milks, and a few other tasks that make them worth their high price tag.

Breville Fountain Crush vs. Breville Big Squeeze Juicer, What’s The Difference?

Big Squeeze is another slow juicer by Breville, which puts it in the same category as the Fountain Crush (listed above). So what makes them different and which should you choose?

Both juicer are quite the same:

  • 240 watts motor.
  • Slow juicer with quiet operation.
  • Direction control for reversing juicing direction when needed (if a fruit is stuck, for example).
  • Can juice anything from hard fruit, soft fruit or leafy greens.

What’s different, then?

The only difference between the Big Squeeze and Fountain Crush is the chute size:

  • The Big Squeeze has a large chute that can accommodate most fruit and vegetables without the need to cut them before.
  • The Fountain Crush has a small chute, so cutting and prepping your ingredients is required.

Which Breville Juicer Is The Right One For You?

Firs thing you need to decide on is whether you want a centrifugal or a masticating juicer.

How To Choose Between a Centrifugal or Masticating Juicer?

  • If you like your juice on the lighter side and don’t care if you’re not getting the MAXIMUM amount of nutrients in your juice (you’re still getting good nutrients!), and happened to have a budget of under $200, a Centrifugal is the right choice of you. Either the Breville Fountain Plus or Juice Fountain Cold would make a great choice for you.
  • If you prefer your juice of thick and smooth texture (almost smoothie-like), while getting the most out of your ingredients, then you’ll definitely want a masticating juicer. However, you’ll need a budget of over $200 for a proper one. Apart from Breville’s Fountain Crush, we’d also recommend you look at OMEGA juicers, too.

Breville Crush Juice Fountain Demonstration:

What Is a Masticating Juicer?

A Masticating juicer, also known as a low-speed juicer, are a type of juicing appliance that juices using crushing and squeezing at a slow speed. Because the juicer works at a slow speed, usually there would be NO foaming, clogging or heat build up. It also protects oxidation and keeps the healthy enzymes of fruits and vegetables. The design of a Masticating juicer is usually horizontal, the juice comes out of one end and the pulp comes out another, where those are located will depend on the model of the juicer.

  • Both juicers are masticating juicers, however, the Omega has an exclusive Dual Stage juicing system that squeezing the pulp after juicing to get every little bit of juice out.

  • The Brevilile BJS600XL has the same specifications of both the Omega and Hurom juicers. It runs 80 RPMs, but it has an ultra quite and more powerful motor with 240-watts power. Like the Hurom, it has a vertical design.
  • The one feature that the Breville has that the other juicers don’t is the Direction Control feature. This allows you to forward or reverse the direction the juicer is going. Why is this important? It comes very useful when fruit or vegetable jams happen. If you’ve got a piece of food jammed in the juicer, simply reversing the direction can get it unstuck.
  • Unlike the Omega J8006, this Breville juicer has only one function of slow-juicing and not anything else.

What About the Difference Between Omega J8006 and Breville 800JEXL Juicer?

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor

The Breville 800JEXL is NOT a slow juicer (masticating), but a Centrifugal juicer. It has 1000-watts power, and two speeds: low is 6,500 RPMs and high is 13,000 RPMs. The 800JEXL has a premium stainless steel finish, a 3″ wide feeding chute and a large capacity pulp container.

We can’t really compare the Breville 800JEXL to any of the previous juicers we talked about as they don’t fall into the same category. The Breville 800JEXL is one of the highest end juicers you can buy, and probably has the best quality possible. It’s a great purchase, as long as you know it’s not a masticating juicer, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this isn’t the juicer for you.
