Hard Anodization is a process done mostly to Aluminum that makes it smooth, durable and most importantly, nonstick, which is something you need in a cookware set.

In this process, aluminum is immersed in a chemical that applies an electric current to it, causing it to oxide and therefore, hardens it.

After that, different nonstick materials are applied to the cookware. From regular teflon nonstick to ceramic or titanium, which is the most durable out of them all.

What Are the Advantages of Using Hard Anodized Cookware?

Durability:

Hard anodized cookware is the very durable. It is scratch resistant, and depending on the nonstick material you choose, it won’t chip or peel easily. But overall, hard anodized cookware is twice as hard as stainless steel cookware, therefor, tougher and more durable.

Performance:

Hard anodized cookware distributes heat better and retains it, too. The material is also non-reactive, it will not react to acidic food like some cookware does.

Nonstick:

Hard anodized cookware is nonstick on its own, but most brands will add additional nonstick layering to give it even more durable coating. I would recommend you choose either ceramic or titanium coating for the best performance.

Cleaning:

Like most nonstick cookware, hard anodized cookware is very easy to clean. Whether you choose to clean it by hand or in a dishwasher, food residue and spots should come right out.

What Are the Disadvantages of Hard Anodized Cookware?

No Induction Compatibility:

If you’re one of the people who have induction cooktop, unfortunately, this type of cookware isn’t for you. You may find a brand that provides something to work with induction, but most hard anodized cookware are still not induction ready.

High Heat Issues:

While the fact that hard anodized cookware distributes and retains heat nicely, this can also be a disadvantage if you’re keeping your cookware exposed to heat for too long. You’ll want to keep an eye on your food as it cooks, since the cookware stays hot longer. Pre-heating should also be on a lower heat.

Price:

Because hard anodized cookware is more durable, it is usually more expensive that other material cookware, too. So even though you’re initially paying more, you’re paying for something that you won’t have to replace soon.

Now that you know enough about this type of cookware, let’s get back to our main question. Is hard anodized cookware safe to use?

Is question comes up because of the fact that hard anodized cookware is aluminum based, and it’s a well known fact that high concentrations of aluminum, especially when exposed to heat, can be toxic.

Well, this is exactly why anodization happens in the first place. Aluminum is cured in a way seals it away from the heat. When you cook using hard anodized cookware, non of your food is exposed to the aluminum itself. The anodization as well as additional nonstick coating makes the cookware durable, nonstick, non-peeling and scratch resistant, making it very safe to use, all while getting the benefit of aluminum’s tough properties.
